Boundary Waters Canoe Area: Take a step back in time & experience the quiet, pristine wilderness. Hear the call of the Timberwolves & loons, view amazing sunsets & explore lakes & trails on a journey of self-discovery.  
Tour Price:  $350 (5-day trip!)
Deposit: $100  (Non-refundable unless tour is cancelled by Thompson Travel Tours)
Final Payment deadline:  45 days prior to departure

Day 1:

  • Drive to Duluth
  • Arrive in Duluth for lunch (Probably Grandma’s Restaurant, need $ for this)
  • Sightseeing:
    Possible stops include:
    1. Gooseberry Falls
    2. Split Rock Lighthouse
    3. Canal Park
  • Arrive in Grand Marais
  • Supper at Subway or DQ (need $ for this)
  • Sightseeing in Grand Marais – interesting little town
  • Arrive at Clearwater Lodge on the Gunflint Trail

    Clearwater Lodge

  • Get permit, watch video & take test on BWCA protocol (“Leave No Trace”)
  • Repack gear, etc.

Day 2:

  • Breakfast in the Bunkhouse
  • Drive to Bearskin Lake (Entry Point 60) – leave lodge by 8AM!
  • Paddle across Bearskin Lake
  • 75-rod portage to Duncan Lake (“Rods” are used to measure the length of a trail you must portage – or carry all of your belongings. One rod = one canoe length)
  • 80-rod Staircase Portage into Rose Lake
  • Find campsite, set up camp, explore area, etc.

Days 3 – 4:
Day trips include:

  • Bridal Veil Falls
  • Hiking the Border Route Trail
  • Canada
  • Swimming
  • Fishing
  • Exploring/Paddling to nearby lakes, etc

Evening activities include:

  • Sunset appreciation
  • Campfires
  • S’mores
  • Group-bonding time, etc.

Day 5:

  • Tear down campsite
  • Leave Rose Lake (UP the Staircase Portage!)
  • Paddle across Duncan Lake
  • 75-rod portage into Bearskin Lake
  • Paddle across Bearskin Lake
  • Drive to Clearwater Lodge
  • Repack gear
  • Head for home
  • Stop for lunch along the way (need $ for this)
  • Will call families to notify of arrival time.  It will be LATE!

  • Showers upon return to Clearwater Lodge

Not Included:
Meals while driving to/from BWCA

  • 1 lunch at Grandma’s Restaurant in Duluth
  •  1 evening meal in Grand Marais (DQ or Subway)
  •  1 lunch in Grand Marais on return trip (DQ or Subway)
  •  1 evening meal in St. Cloud on return trip (Panera Bread)
